Texas ASLA Honor Award - 2019

mill city teaching farm

Dallas, Texas | Size: 2.0 acres | Client: Mill City Association

Mill City is an under-served, low-income community within a "food desert" of southeast Dallas. In the past, drug-related and vice crimes have caused businesses to relocate resulting in disinvestment and neglect. Due to this neglect, vacant lots within the community have become illegal dumping grounds or overgrown. Our team met with local leaders in 2017 to explore the selected site and discuss all of the desired uses and goals for the urban farm. The team then conducted extensive research into the various programs and contemporary agricultural systems focused on integrating various enterprises with the goal of lowering operational costs and required labor for the farm. The result of that research is the multi-enterprise integrated agricultural system that follows.
